Social Movements: Final Exam
You must answer all 4 questions. Each question is worth 25 points. Put the question number at the start of your answer. You must utilize class concepts in answering the questions. Answers must be is essay format (approx. 2-3 pages each question). Answers need to contain citations and references.
1. Historically, social movements in America have used a variety of tactics. Write an essay that examines tactical selection and social movements. First, discuss the different aims that guide tactical selection by social movements. Second, identify and describe the factors that influence tactical selection. Third, examine the ways that social movements often use multiple tactics to achieve their aims. Fourth, using BLM, Arab Spring, or right- wing movements as an example, analyze the factors that have affected their tactical choices.
2. Civil disobedience has become a common tactic for many US social movements. Write an essay that examines the use of social disobedience by US social movements. First, explain what civil disobedience is, its two forms, and which form is utilized by social movements. Second, examine what kinds of social movements tend to use civil disobedience and under what conditions. Third, using BLM, Arab Spring, or right-wing movements as an example, discuss how civil disobedience challenges authority and how it potentially contributes to social change.
3. While Arab Spring and Black Lives Matter build on older forms of activism, they are representative of a new form of activism. Using one of the movements, (1) examine how recent social media technologies have created new opportunities and forms of activism. Specifically, analyze how activists are using social media to mobilize supporters and to organize protest. (2) Both movements are thought to embody new organizational forms, often referred to as horizontalism (e.g., networked movements). Describe this form of organization and its benefits. (3) Discuss drawbacks to social media-based and horizontal forms of activism.
4. Write an essay that examines whether as a society we can “shop our way to social change.” In answering, first, define and discuss political and ethical consumerism. In particular, discuss why there has been a proliferation of ethical consumerism, and the ways that ethical consumerism can lead to social change. Second, explain and discuss Szasz’s critique of ethical/political consumerism and his idea of “inverted quarantine.”

1. Think of significant events in your family life: Has your religion influenced how you marked the occasion? How might someone from a different family/religious background have marked the occasion?
2. What is the demographic transition? How does it affect government programs, society, and family relationships?
3. What are the two trends that could mitigate the challenges of a growing elderly population?
4. Explain the conservative, liberal, and critical viewpoints on family diversity.
5. What are the advantages of living with family members? How does not having a family prevent a person from having these advantages?

Preparation
Resource material has been researched and chosen. The paper must have at least two references from peer-reviewed sociological
Make sure you are researching your approved topic.
PowerPoint video comparing education from both perspectives, or paradigms, has been reviewed.
Familiarized yourself with APA writing style.
Cover Page
Abstract
3-4 Pages for the body of the paper
Reference page
For every reference on the reference page, there should be an in-line cite and for every in-line cite there should be a reference listed on the reference page.
The paper must contain at least two references from peer reviewed sociological journals.
A rule of thumb is at least two references for every page of the body. e.g. three pages of essay would require approximately six references.
References from public websites should not be the majority of the references
Online text-books can be used as references.
Openstax Introduction to SociologyLinks to an external site.
Do Not Use Wikipedia. Although you cannot use Wikipedia, you can look at the references that the author of the Wikipedia article used. You should be able to review the reference list and find some legitimate academic articles, news or textbooks pertaining to your topic. Go to those sources rather than trying to use Wikipedia itself.
Begin with an introductory paragraph that describes the topic and why it is important.
Example: Poverty is a major social problem in America because …
Transition to the first paradigm
Use a couple of paragraphs to interpret the issue linking it to a sociological perspective. Be sure that the paper looks and feels like a sociology paper.
Incorporate the applicable vocabulary and establish the link(s) to your topic and conflict theory.

Transition to the second paradigm (functionalism)
Tie everything together in a section labeled “Conclusion”

Having references in the body that do not appear on the reference page
Failing to include two references from peer reviewed sociological journals
Failing to include sociological vocabulary
Writing in the first person instead of third person.
Not making sure the header changed between the first and second page.
Your paper is in trouble if it fails to…

Week 13:

Week 15:

Imagine that you have a relative who is very opinionated but lacks many facts to support those opinions. This person thinks that cities are bad places to live because there is so much crime, and that rural and suburban areas are place with morally superior people and are places where no one has to lock their doors. Diplomatically, but firmly, you will tell this rather ignorant relative that he/she is wrong, based on the lectures for this course from week 13 and 14. What will you say?

Whenever you refer to a concept from the lectures, be sure to provide a brief definition (preferably, in your own words, not simply copying over a definition from the lectures) and then use it to help answer the discussion question. In other words — “define it and then apply it.”

A suggested length to your answer is 150-200 words (understanding that 150 is a minimum for a decent grade). You may apply personal examples (about you, your family, your community, your friends and your society), but you must be sure that you link these examples to the subject matter of the lectures in this course. Otherwise, the examples are extraneous and will lower your grade.
The rubrics for this discussion:
Connectedness– The discussion post demonstrates an ability to cite/connect specific concepts, examples and content from the lectures when answering the discussion question;
Relevance– The discussion post shows how the topics relate to either/or your life, current events, or the content, concepts and examples from the previous two weeks of lectures in RS 1500;
Thoughtfulness– The discussion post exemplifies thoughtfulness, originality, and critical thinking. It is not merely a regurgitation or mimicking of the words in the lecture slides, but rather connecting the topic to course content and/or examples outside of class, using your sociological imagination; and
Quality– The discussion post shows you invested some time and effort in your answer. It addresses the discussion question fully. It is not full of typographical errors, misspellings, or poor sentence structure. A good idea is to write the post in Word with the spelling and grammar checker on, and then copy over for the purposes of posting on Carmen.
We will grade your post based on how well you demonstrate that you have viewed/listened to the audio lectures on PowerPoint.
